Grumeti River Camp is specifically recommended at the beginning of the month of June to end of November. It offers outstanding game viewing from the start of June to mid July and also in November. During that time game viewing is at its best in Western Serengeti since other than the resident population of wildlife there will be several migrating herds matching through the nearby areas.
Location
Grumeti River Camp is found in the
Serengeti corridor
at the far west end of the corridor; it is set roughly 30 miles east of Lake Victoria. This lodge is found south of Grumeti River which flows nearly the entire length of the western corridor.
Accommodation
Accommodation at the River Camp includes a main lodge area set on the shores of a small hippo pool plus 10 sleeping tents that are amply spaced across the property to offer utmost privacy. The 10 tents are well fitted with a double bed that these can be transformed into 2 twin beds on guests’ request.
The common areas are really spectacular as they comprise of a living room, a bar, interior and exterior dinning places as well as a game viewing patio. The living room looks over one of the tributaries of River Grumeti holding close to 20 resident hippopotami. During your stay this River Camp, make sure that you spare 1 to 2 hours to watch these intriguing animals. In addition, there is a small lavish dive pool to relax or even observe the hippos below.
Food and Drink

Game Viewing
Grumeti River Camp is found in the western section of Serengeti ecosystem. The western corridor of Serengeti is a remote well-known area extending westwards from the Seronera area found in central Serengeti to the direction of Lake Victoria. This somewhat slim corridor extends 50 miles in length and is made up of thick acacia trees interspersed with broken woodlands as well as open plains. The main feature here is River Grumeti which nearly stretches the entire length of this western corridor.
Generally in mid May – the beginning of the dry season, large herds migrating animals leave the plains and move past R. Mbalageti and R. Seronera into the western corridor. Actually, this corridor is a transitional zone for the numerous wildebeests during the dry plus wet seasons. The large herds stay here until July as the dry season entirely hits this area hence moving farther north.
The climax of this north-ward migration occurs in the western corridor as the animals cross River Grumeti which is filled with giant Nile crocodiles. It’s very dramatic scenery!
Also River Grumeti supports a riverine forest home to the gorgeous black & white colobus monkeys.
There are some other resident wild animals living in this corridor such as wildebeests plus zebras that don’t join the migratory herd. Also giraffes, waterbucks, buffaloes, Thomson’s gazelles, elands, impalas as well as topi, can be seen, in addition to predators such as hyenas, lions, cheetahs and leopards.
