Elephants on rampage continue to damage crops within the villages in Serengeti District despite an operational tour by Mr. Mahmoud Mgimwa the Deputy Minister for Natural Resources & Tourism in the district to get a long-term means to fix the problem, a week ago.
Mr. Jumanne Kwiro the Vice-Chairman of the Serengeti District Council informed us that these elephants are entering villages ruining crops each and every day and are currently converting into granaries. at the moment this situation is even worsening.
The herds are moving from Serengeti National Park and the nearby Ikorongo Grumeti wildlife reserves
He added that nearly all the villages in close proximity to Serengeti National Park along with the game reserves are being penetrated each day and the quantity of elephants is scary.
He added that they aren’t acquiring any help despite assurance they obtained from Mr. Kwiro the Deputy Minister who also doubles as councilor for the Natta Ward where these elephants have brought on substantial destruction on the crop farms. The wander elephants are even more threatening lives of the people within the villages.
Officials approximate that Serengeti District has nearly Twenty seven villages with many hundreds of locals vulnerable to the rampaging elephants.
A week ago, Mr. Mgimwa the Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism toured the district to attempt to end the situation. He informed officials in Mara together with local leaders that the Tanzania government will repay the affected peasants and the families whose people were killed by these wild animals
The Deputy Minister commanded the officials to hurry up the settlement process. These Rampaging elephants are reported to be the reason for the consistent food shortages and under-development in a number of places encompassing game protected sanctuaries.
